A new site of mine will require authors to login, but rather than having them see the normal WordPress logo on the login page, I replaced it with my own. This is also a good idea if you’re building a site for a client, so you can give them their own branded login page. It’s easy and quick, but shows you paid attention to details.

Here is an example:

Before:

After:

Here is how you do it:

Backup yoursite.com/wp-admin/images/logo-login.gif

Create your logo image with transparent background or match background color (#f9f9f9)

Save as logo-login.gif and overwrite existing file

Backup yoursite.com/wp-login.php

Change (‘login_headerurl’, ‘http://wordpress.org/’); to (‘login_headerurl’, ‘http://yoursite.com/’);

Save wp-login.php and overwrite existing file

That’s all it takes. If you’d rather use a plugin, there are some available to help you customize your login page.

WordPress Custom Admin Branding – This changes the log in screen, as well as the logo in the header and footer of your admin panel.

Branded WordPress Log In Screen – This is a plugin that brands only the log in screen.

UPDATE:

When you upgrade WordPress, you will need to do this again. Upgrading to the latest version, 2.8.4 in this case, overwrote the files with the originals.

I don’t recall at which version upgrade this originally occured at, but for quite some time I’ve been having login issues with WordPress. Whenever I’d log into the WordPress Admin area, I’d enter my username, password and check the box to “Remember Me.” I found; however, that if I were to leave the Admin area to check changes on the blog, and then attempt to reenter the Admin area, I would no longer be logged in.

It didn’t matter if the site was the only one on an account, if the blog were installed at the root level, if it was the only script installed, if I had any plugins installed, or not. Not one of them would keep me logged in. Since I use Firefox and have the blog open in one tab and the Admin area opened in another, it hasn’t been much of an issue. I still wanted to figure out the solution though…

So, here’s what I found to work best for my situation. If you try this and still have login issues, I’ll provide some other ideas in a moment. First, I noticed that I was using the normal meta login link (i.e. yoursite.com/wp-login.php). While, I feel that if you check the Remember Me checkbox on that page it should remember your details, I found that as an Admin I didn’t need to use that URL. Instead, use the URL for the Admin area (i.e. yoursite.com/wp-admin/) and make sure you have the trailing slash.

Now, it would be nice if it were to set a cookie that lasts longer than a session, but beggars can’t be choosers. At least I only have to log in once per day, or however long I have the browser open… If anyone has a suggestion as to keep me logged in for a longer duration, I’d appreciate the info.

If the above suggestion didn’t work for you, here are some more from a WordPress support topic:

wp-config.php needs updating with both 2.6 and 2.7 because new cookie keys have been added. Note: Back up your wp-config.php first. Transfer your info (not the whole code) from your old wp-config.php file into the new one and generate and add the keys. See: http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php

Delete cookies, empty browser cache, and quit and restart the browser. Sometimes this can clear odd login issues.

Try a different browser or check if a browser update is available.

If you are using Safari, open the preferences and make sure that Autofill user names and passwords is selected.

Temporarily disable all plugins and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then a plugin is at fault.

Please keep in mind that this may not work in your case, if you are experiencing similar issues, but this is what worked for me. I find it strange, considering the amount of support for WordPress and the near continuous updates, that they would have numerous releases with this known issue.
