Long Weekend, Sick Again

I’m really getting sick and tired of being sick and tired this year… This is the second time I’ve been sick recently. Actually I don’t think I even made it back to 100% after the first cold I ended up with after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, my son and wife are in the same boat. Being so busy this time of year, this weekend especially, really doesn’t help matters.

Saturday, we were busy during the day and ended up with the harebrained idea that we should go shopping and take advantage of the later hours – we left for Arden Fair mall at around 7:00pm, dropped off some items to be engraved, and then headed over to Toys R Us. Fortunately, it didn’t seem as scary as an average night at that store…

With gift lists in hand, we made our rounds throughout the store, loading up our cart, and as time wore on, the less decisive we got, which made the trip last that much longer. We debated several options for our son’s big gift this year and ended up leaving Toys R Us at almost midnight! What were we thinking?

To follow that up, we stayed out late last night, after wrapping gifts all day, doing our holiday photos. Our appointment was at 8:00pm and they thought they were closing at 10:00pm. Unfortunately, that store closed at 9:00pm and we were there almost a half hour beyond that time.

I woke up this mornig with a sore throat, sinus pressure, and a cough… ‘Tis the season…

Save Money With Secret Santas

The economy is in the crapper, but that doesn’t mean your Christmas should be too. A great idea for saving money is to do a Secret Santa with your family. Instead of everybody getting each other gifts, limit it to just one gift for one other person for whom you will be their Secret Santa.

So, it’s not a new idea, but there is a site that makes it a whole lot easier! Elfster.com is a free service that allows all of your family members to join and the names will automagically be paired up with another family member. Each person can create a wish list that their Secret Santa can refer to so each person is sure to get what they want, without breaking the bank.

A Secret Santa is also a good idea to introduce for another important reason. Assume you have a family member who really cannot afford to do the normal holiday giving, but is too proud to say something. As long as there is a limit agreed upon and everyone signs on to the Secret Santa idea, the family can still experience the joy of giving and the money strapped relative can save face.

Part of my family has done the Secret Santa thing for years, and another part is fairly new to the idea, but uses Elfster.com, which makes it much easier than hand drawing names from a hat.
