U Comment I Follow

Posted by: drivelocity In: Blogging| Site News

I’m a strong opponent of the nofollow tag, but somehow forgot to check WordPress to see if it was included by default. I was just over on another blog where I saw the “U Comment I Follow” button and decided to check… Why, yes it is. After a few minutes of digging, I couldn’t find where it was in the code, and it actually took less time to find the DoFollow plugin (see below).

I’ve just activated it and have it set to disallow the nocomment tag from all comments. So, now, if you comment on drivelocity.com, and provide a link, search engines will be able to follow it back to your site. One down side is that I may get more spam, but I’ve chosen to moderate comments, so they won’t make it through. With the DoFollow plugin, you can also set it to disallow the nofollow tag from registered users, set it to disable the nofollow tag after a certain amount of time, etc.

Whether to follow or nofollow on comments is still a highly debatable topic but for me, it’s a no brainer. It’s do follow for my blog. It’s really good for link building.

I just implemented Do follow on my blog using Lucia’s Linky love plugin. It looks like Linky love gives you a few more options vs your choice.

The main difference is Linky love lets you set the number of comments before they become do follow, this rewords your regular commenters and does not give do follow to “drive bys”

Thanks for the comments Ned! I haven’t heard of Lucia’s Linky Love. That option to limit Do Follow to those having a certain number of minimum posts sounds great, but unless you have a big announcement to let visitors know, you’d probably still get the same number of drive bys… I’ll have to check it out though!

Glad to have another dofollow blog to visit!:-

Your blog is already doing so well so this would be more of a “thank you” to your readers, I guess.

7 | drivelocity

February 19th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Thanks for the visit & comment skyje! I definitely want to give something back to those who comment. IMHO, it’s one of the best ways to determine how well a blog is doing. If nobody takes the time to comment, then you’re probably doing something wrong… You’ve got to motivate people to interact and when a blog is new, a little link bribery doesn’t hurt.

It looks like your blog is doing well. How do you like the Guzel theme? I’m using it on another blog – it’s working out well and was well received by visitors. It can be a pain to customize though. I like the individual RSS feeds per category, but I don’t know how to change out the links to utilize Feedburner… any ideas?

I’ve been comment friendly for the best two years now and that move has paid off in more traffic as well as higher quality comments.

Sure, the occasional spammer sneaks through but I can obliterate their comment before any harm is done.

I haven’t done U Comment/I Follow, but my blogs are an easy place to get some linky love.

It’s important to note that just by installing these types of plugins you are not guaranteed more traffic. I’ve installed the same ones on other blogs and this is the only one that gets great comments. The others mainly get spam, if anything. I think the niche is very important too…

Well, Such discussion regarding whether to do follow the link on the comment or not is heard here and there. But I personally believe as there is no reason to keep any blog as a no follow except to stop spam which can be done by many other means.

For every blog that we have had, we always tried to make sure that no follow was in there. A lot of times we just had to take it out in the code, but it took time to find. Yes, the spam increased, but if you moderate comments like you are, then you should have no problem. Congrats on joining the movement.

As long as you’ve got a good spam blocker, there’s no reason not to go DoFollow. It was implemented to thwart spambots who don’t really even care whether they’re sent out to post on blogs that are nofollow or dofollow. It’s counterproductive and the invention of it didn’t really solve anything – especially since Yahoo still ignores the tag outright!

@First Home Buying, – I agree. Akismet has done a great job for me. I am do follow and I don’t think I have gotten any more spam comments by being so.

However I have not promoted my blog as do follow by getting on the various do follow lists. I have noted some of the more popular blogs I read have gone back to no follow because they said they got way more increased spam messages.

Thanks a lot for not selecting, “remove nofollow for registered users only”

I hate registering for comments.. comments should be open for all

25 | drivelocity

May 22nd, 2009 at 10:19 am

No problem. I think that would defeat the purpose. Either you have open comments, or require registration, so that option is a little pointless, IMO.

I think you need to moderate and allow do follow. You want relevant comments and you want to reward people at the same time. There should also be limits as to how many comments there can be.

35 | Jessica

August 4th, 2009 at 6:06 am

Hi,
Dofollow is good but unfortunately as Google continues to refine their algorithm to discount spammy links and moves toward semantic search, and considering that most blogs have a low pagerank, I don’t foresee the benefit of do follow links continuing much longer. I also think this will contribute to Google losing relevance as eventually the only search results you will get are for mega conglomerate organizations that have been around forever.
Regards,
Jessica

Jessica, There’s really no way for us to know what to believe. I’ve read recently that because many spammy sites use nofollow links, those will be the types of sites penalized.

Hi, its nice to see that you have removed the no follow tag from the link. As the main purpose of no follow tag was to stop comment spam but hope it was unable to stop the flow of spam comment and on the another hand the real commentator didn’t get any reason to leave a comment. Comment moderisation is really one of the best way to get rid of comment spam rather than activiating no follow tag.

47 | Traian

July 26th, 2010 at 4:22 pm

as you may already know, Google and other major search engines are using a page segmentation analysis, which will allow search engine bots to identify sections on web pages, such as comments, footer, blog rolls and so on. Even if dofollow is still passing page rank, I don’t think it will work on the long run.

spam blockers are really needed these days because you will always get spam from e-mails and on your facebook account too.;’-
