Top Commentators Plugin

Posted by: drivelocity In: Blogging| Site News

After spending some time surfing some marketing and SEO related blogs, I decided to give the Top Commentators plugin a try. It allows you to add a widget to your sidebar that will display the visitors who post the most comments in a certain period of time. You can exclude specific people, like I did for myself, and set it to reset hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or show top commentors of all time. There are a bunch of other options to customize the display. It’s another reward system for people commenting on your blog, like the CommentLuv plugin I added recently, that can provide a link back to the commentor’s site on your blog’s index, or on every page, which is how I currently have it set…

So, if you’d like to be listed and linked to in the right sidebar, start posting some comments! Keep in mind that comments are moderated and blatant spam will not make it through this human filter.

With moderation in place due to likelihood of spams, this is one of those plugins who will help increase visitors’ participation via commenting and a way of giving back to your active readers too.

You’re right about that! the past couple days I’ve seen a nice increase in traffic, though I have been commenting on other blogs a lot more, so it was bound to happen regardless. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! I’ll be sure to check out your blog – it looks like you have a lot of great info!

I added this feature to my blog about a week ago, and I’ve noticed an increase in comments. And I also noticed an increase in traffic after installing CommentLuv, too (I’m actually publishing a post about this tomorrow morning). These features definitely do help. I’d also recommend adding the Subscribe to Comments plugin, so readers can keep track of the conversation.

You have a great blog here! :-)

Yan, Thank you, I’ll let you know :)

Diana, Thank you very much for the kind words! I look forward to reading your post! And, I’ll be sure to check out the other plugin… I’m curious, how different is it from the comments RSS feed?

It’s a great plugin, along with KeywordLuv (although less adopted by many bloggers)

Diana, I just installed the Subscribe To Comments plugin and, after some teeth grinding and hair pulling due to issues with this theme, I got it working… Thanks, again, for the tip!

I hate to say it, but I didn’t have the Hijack Proof setting selected, so two of the top commentators were switched to two visitors who posted comments using the same name. The Hijack Proof setting uses the email address instead. Unfortunately, I couldn’t fix it.

This is what I tried: With Hijack Proofing turned off, I unapproved the new comments, temporarily changed their names, turned on the Hijack Proofing, changed their names back and then approved their comments again.

I ended up just changing their names for their comments. At least until I figure out why that didn’t work.

Please note that I’ve changed the link to the Top Commentators download – the other one had a link hijack bug that is fixed in the version I’ve linked to now.

It is really kind of you to share link love with your blog commentators. It can be a WIN-WIN situation for both the blogger and the commentator with such plugins provided that people do not resort to spam in order to gain some quick links. When there are such generous bloggers like you who don’t mind sharing some link juice, the commentators too should have the courtesy to leave meaningful and useful comments which can help the blog grow and develop meaningful conversations on the blog.

kent, There are also lists devoted to these types of plugins. If you can get included on those lists, it will be even more beneficial. I don’t have the lists on hand, but you can find them on google. If I think about it, I’ll try compiling them into a new post.

  • drivelocity: I love the ignorant comments like the last one. They provide no reason, no research and no rationale beyond that of a spoiled 2yr old. It just proves
  • Russell: Domains by Proxy (DBP) is ideal to publish hate sites as long as you don't use your real name. Somebody has done that to me - and DBP don't care.
  • Fred: Whenever I hear the t-mobile ring tone I have to say get more, and that's all I know about the carrier.
