Saving Money – Tips & Tricks

Posted by: drivelocity In: Home Life

Times are tough and if you’re like me, you’re looking for ways to cut costs in your everyday life. Some people may not get why I’m upset about SIRIUS raising rates, but it all adds up. Here are some things we’ve done around our house to save money:

Work:

  • Car Pool – Now that my wife and I car pool, we actually drive 5 miles more per day, but save $10/day in parking. There’s also more freeway driving, so we get better gas mileage.
  • Bag Lunches – My wife takes food to work rather than eating out now, which saves a lot. I eat lunch at home & take care of leftovers, so we don’t waste food.

Utilities:

  • Cancel Home Phone – Not really necessary these days with skype, cell phones and email, unless you need to use a fax machine, but then there’s always eFax.
  • Cut Cell Phone Bill – I realized that I don’t text enough to need an unlimited plan, so I switched. Of course, once I’m eligible for a new phone, it will be hard to resist a Blackberry with a data plan.
  • Cancel Pest Control – We had it for a while and it seemed to have worked, but now we’ll see how we do without it. So far so good.

Entertainment:

  • Cancel SIRIUS – Two recent rate increases made this an easy decision & I don’t listen to it for more than an hour or two a day.
  • Cancel Book/Movie Clubs – My wife loves these and even though she sent books back, it was still a charge on our credit card and wait for a refund. I’m glad to be rid of these.
  • Don’t Renew Magazines – I’m a firm believer that everything in magazines can be found for free online. They’re a waste of money and trees. My wife is letting all subscriptions lapse.
  • Lower Netflix Plan – One movie at a time is enough for us right now, especially with a RedBox around the corner. We may cancel it entirely in the future.
  • Record Movies – I took advantage of free Showtime this month on AT&T U-Verse and recorded a bunch of movies that were on our Netflix queue.
  • Buy Used Books – Many used book stores will also buy books in turn for credit, so you can then buy books at half price.

Home:

  • Switch to CFLs – Almost every light in our house is a compact fluorescent and those that aren’t don’t get used much.
  • Cover Windows – During the heat of the day, block it by keeping blinds and drapes closed.
  • Open Windows – When it cools down outside, open windows and turn off the air conditioning.
  • Recycle – We saved our aluminum cans and plastic water bottles to take the recyclers. We don’t buy those anymore, but family members save theirs and the CRV goes to our son’s account.
  • Sell Baby Stuff - Craigslist is great – you can get barely used baby items at great prices & turn around and resell them for about the same price. You, basically, got to use it for free. A local Craiglist type site is SactoClassifieds.
  • Swap Baby Stuff – If you have a baby, chances are you know others who do as well. We swap, or rotate clothing & toys among friends & think of it as free off site storage.

Food:

  • Veggie Garden – Its fun and worthwhile not having to buy lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. It’s also healthy and educational for our son! He loves picking tomatoes, even if they’re not ripe…
  • Eat Less – Generally, we over indulge, so if you split a meal in half or leave enough for lunch the next day, you can save money and lose weight.
  • Generic Food – Many name brand foods have identical generic counterparts that cost much less & taste the same.
  • Ditch Bottled Water – Our fridge has a water filter, so why not use it? We refill bottles and rarely buy them anymore, which is also better for the environment.
  • No More Soda – A while back I stopped drinking soda. I’ve had some a few times at BBQs, but I don’t buy it.

Other ideas that we could implement to save even more money:

  • Cancel Cable – We would still have Internet, but I think we’d be miserable without decent TV
  • Cancel Netflix – Getting rid of the lowest level they offer would save almost $10/mo
  • Turn Off Computers – I tend to leave my desktop PC on all the time as I never know when I can jump on and get some work done
  • Change Thermostat – Since my body tends to run warm, I’d be miserable during the summer
  • Reduce Water Usage – Once they start metering water, we’ll need to decrease our sprinkler timers.
  • Change Auto Insurance – I’m a faithful kind of guy, but if I need to, I’ll shop around for cheaper insurance, like at esurance.

Wow. It sounds funny. To save money You mentioned all those things which are actually necessary.

Which of those, specifically, are necessary?

You can easily live without all of them, but we’ve grown used to having so many idol luxuries that we fool ourselves into believing that we really need them.

We did this last week and I am so excited to have that extra 68.00 a month

We also had two cars and noticed 95% of the time one of the cars was not being used, so we sold the gas hog and now only have 1 car..we got the extra cash and now save 40 percent on our car insurance.

Wow! $68/mo for phone service? Ouch!

I hear you on the cars… now that we’re carpooling, we could probably do with one car, but if we have different plans on the weekend, it would be a problem. I also wouldn’t want to be without a car in case of emergency, whether it’s my wife in an accident, or an illness/injury with my son.

You’re right on about bag lunches. Fast food treats are getting so expensive that it’s not even advisable for one to eat it everyday for lunch. Aside from it being so unhealthy.
Hhmmm… very nice ideas. Thanks for sharing them. :)

These are excellent ways to save. These days we all need to do some saving and these tips would prove really useful. For your home, it would also help to unplug your appliances when you leave this house. And for food, weekly menu lists and grocery shopping lists are great to keep spending in check. It helps keep you focused on the things that you only need. Thanks!

Eating out is way too expensive. The worst part is you won’t notice it in the short run.

Excellent tips, I use a lot of these. I also look for 2 for 1 deals in the supermarket and we make batches of food (i.e lasagne or curry). We freeze the spare portions and microwave them later for fast food at a fraction of the cost.

There are definitely tons of ways to save money! Its really about savings here and there piled up to contribute to huge savings! We don’t use a home phone either; everyone just uses his/her cell phone! You can purchase many used things! Sometimes you can find great pieces of furniture etc at your thrift store or a moving sale. I also don’t drink soda its much better this way.

Till then,

Jean

Common sense tips for saving money! Well done.
I’m a huge fan of CFLs and wrote a blog post on them last year. They made a big difference in our electric bill, and got us out of the more expensive “2nd tier” rates. That said, I think it is under-reported that they often burn out within a year if used in a room like a bathroom where they are cycled on and off all the time. They don’t last 10,000 hours. I don’t mind too much at this point since I got a lot of them on sale (subsidized by SCE) for 4 for $1 I think, but I also think there should be “full disclosure” that they only last the full life cycle in areas where they are not cycled a lot…

Thanks Steve. I didn’t know about the lower life span depending on usage. We actually just got some dimming CFLs at Costco not too long ago and one burned out, or broke, within a day or two. Unfortunately, I never looked into having it replaced.

That’s a good way to save the money. Don’t forget also to save money on fuel or transport cost. Don’t go anywhere unless very important.

Ruri, Great tip, and for me that means not spending money on other stuff – We usually run errands to buy things, so having cut down needless purchasing, we’ve cut down on fuel and mileage.

Nice tips to follow. But I don’t think everything among the above could be perfectly followed because I don’t prefer to use second hand items for my babies. I agree with all the other plans.
Good one and thanks for sharing.
