Thank you Akismet!

Posted by: drivelocity In: Blogging

Starting on January 12, 2009, another blog I run came under severe spam attack and it has been increasing since. Until that point it had received maybe a couple dozen spam comments, at the most. On January 12, 2009, it jumped up to 217, then to 361 on the 13th, and 409 already today!

Thanks to the Akismet plugin for WordPress, only one spam comment made it through to the queue. Akismet has successfully blocked over 1,300 pieces of spam in the past month. Take a look at these stats!

Looking into this further, I found that much of this spam was comming from 83.233.30.32, which is located in Sweden based on the WHOIS search I did on that IP address. I also contacted the two abuse email addresses on file. I’ll post an update if I get a response.

So, consider this a heads up – make sure you have Akismet installed. It’s easy to set up and to get a key, you only need to register on WordPress.com. Once you register, check your profile and copy/paste the key into the Akismet Configuration page.

Also, you may want to add 83.233.30.32 to your IP Deny Manager if you use cPanel, or whatever ban list your host provides. While I was at it, I banned the 194.8.75.* range as some of the spam was coming from there as well, but not nearly as much…

The thought of blogging without Akismet it truly frightening. I’d spend all time deleting spam.

Askimet is definitely a very very useful tool. I am surprised everyday by the sheer amount of spam it stops. Though I don’t get that many real visitors, I get a lot of those stupid machines spamming my comments.

James, It definitely is now. I didn’t think I needed it for that blog because it doesn’t get a lot of comments. Nice traffic, but not a lot of comments. I’m sure glad I activated Akismet!

TrainWreckIdeas, It did an amazing job on that site. That graph speaks for itself! 1/1300 spam comments made it through!

I should also note that I haven’t heard back from the two abuse emails I sent, but since banning those IP addresses, spam has pretty much knocked off completely for that site. I’ve seen some similar IP addresses attached to spam comments on this blog, so I’ll be adding them to my IP Deny Manager here as well.

Be attentive for your IP address in future.

Update: It stopped at 409 that day and the next day, I only received five spam comments! That was one (or two) busy spammer(s)!

Ouch. True, that’s quite a bit of spam. :O Coming out of Sweden? How strange. I wonder what the spam messages looked like. :O

For the most part, they were pretty basic, no links in the comments themselves, and were two lines related to gambling… So, if I only had it set to only moderate posts with more than x number of links, and not had akismet, then they would have made it through…

For sure, Akismet is a vital wordpress plug in :)

I have an akismet problem before. There is an ISP used by a lot of internet user in my country, because it’s cheap and fast. Well, I got a problem, really don’t know why it happened, but my comment on some friends’ blog appeared on spam filter.

And, I report it to akismet support, and they solved my problem fast and easy. Thank you too for akismet.

Sometime, spammer effect another people IP. So, maybe we have to be carefoul too. I agree, akismet is a vital wordpress system. Don’t know what will happen with our blog if spammer flood our site with a lot of links. Oh my God. hehe

Evyta, That’s always a tough call. I try not to add an IP range unless absolutely necessary. Individual IP addresses are much less an issue. But you have to weigh the pros and cons and determine whether it’s worth any lost traffic, or lost productivity. How much is your time worth? Unless it gets as severe as I experienced, I’ll put up with some relatively minor annoyances.

Pimple Treatment, thanks for the comment… it definitely helped me out in the situation I noted in the post, but I have found some false positives, so it’s a good idea to check the comments moved to the spam queue every once in a while.

I don’t know why but I’ve been having trouble posting to various blogs lately especially those using Akismet. I’m thinking that one of my comments somewhere showed up on a spam filter but it looks like my IP has been marked too. So Akismet is not really foolproof.

If you have low comments on your blog it could be Akisment preventing legitimate comments too.

lexie, You’re right, I found your comment in the spam queue, but you’re just using your name w/out a link, so it must be the IP address.

Here’s a link I found that may shed some light on this topic:

Akismet is great. When I hear bloggers complain about all the spam I wonder if they use it.

I was being caught by the Akismet filter at one point but I sent them a request to get me out and a number of people manually listed me as not spam. I am not sure which did the trick.

Thanks for the mention Drivelocity. If you have any problems with getting off the Akismet blacklist do let me know.

lexie : try not putting in your URL, try a different email address, to see if these will help you get your comments not flagged as SPAM. Also you can request a review on the akismet site.

regards,
paul

Ned, Thank’s for the comment!

Paul, Thank you for the tips and helping out. It’s enough to make us who haven’t been added to the black list paranoid about it…

After reading this I checked my spam file and sure enough 194.8.75.* was in there. That was number one for me so I blocked it thanks to your tip.

I figure blocking the worst ones will make looking through the file for legitimate comments an easier task.

I have a site that gets a ton of spam from certain countries, and since the site is useless for people in those counties, I’ve banned whole blocks, which you can do easily in cPanel.

Yes, akismet is truly a useful tool. I have blogs in wordpress as well as blogger. What I have noticed is that there are a lot of spam comments posted in wordpress blogs. What could be the reasons for this?

kent, There are other methods to decrease blog spam. Akisment is a first line of defense, but it merely filters it, it doesn’t stop it. On one blog that gets thousands of spam comments, I recently added code to my .htaccess file to block users with no referrers, as those would be the bots. It may have helped some, but I still get a lot of spam there. The next step will be to try a captcha, question/answer plugin, or both.

Akismet is both good and bad.

It does block a lot of spam and in that sense, saves time. The bad thing though, is all the false positives. You lose all the time you saved when you have to manually retrieve all the legitimate comments. The common resolution is to just delete all your comments. I personally think comments are important and add value to a site. I enjoy sites like this with an active comment dialogue going on, it keeps it real.

I was personally placed on the blacklist for no reason and I cannot even get a reply when I contact support. I can’t even post on my own blogs, unless I dig the comments out of the trash bin.

It’s sad because blogging is such a community effort. I have ‘met’ many great people from my blogs and from posting on their blogs. The folks at Akismet decide who and who cannot be involved in the community.

Frustrated,

I haven’t seen many false positives myself. It is very rare that I find a legitimate comment that it has caught.

However I too was caught in their web. I asked a few people to mark me as not spam and I sent them a request to reconsider. Shortly thereafter I was taken back out of their filter and haven’t been caught again.

PS: I never heard back from Akismet. I just stopped being caught by their filter.

You can test it on your own site if you have Akismet by logging out and then leaving a comment.
