I’m Done With Wordpress MU

Posted by: drivelocity In: Blogging

I think I’ve used WordPress MU (multi-user) longer than I’ve used regular WordPress, but my use of MU (on another site) is at an end. I’ve finally had enough of dealing with sploggers. Actually, I simply can’t keep up with them. And, I don’t want to try. By their winning, everyone lost. They were finally provided a place to spam that I couldn’t control, until now. All of their spam is gone and I will likely restart the site anew with a simple WordPress installation and see if I can get some of the legitimate bloggers back as authors of the new blog.

I’m not sure how MU admins do it, unless they have a staff to sit and moderate every account 24/7. Oh well, I don’t have to worry about that anymore.

WP MU will be great for organizations or cooperates however these is still some improvement can be done over security aspects.

Sometimes, handling multi user accounts or social networking accounts can really give head aches. Much better to focus on a single account.

@Aery: There’s a lot of improvement to be done. Right now it doesn’t even deserve to be called service. It should have a huge “BETA” sign slapped on top.

I’ve been tempted at using MU but been put off by learning to use another CMS type system. Your post has put me off further! :)

I’ve been thinking about using Wordpress MU for one of my websites, that I thought would be appropriate to use, Do you think you could make a post of how they spammed you? That might be a great post for your blog, Or if it would be too much trouble perhaps just a follow up comment would be awesome!

Thank you,

Jean

Aery, I’m sure there were a lot of improvements made since the version I was using, but no matter what, there will always be a problem with splogs. For the site I used it on, I decided that I could better serve that niche by starting it from scratch and inviting authors.

Simon, I agree, they can be a drain on focus and productivity. I only use them when I can really use them, though I have plenty of neglected accounts here & there.

four poster bed, I think there are other ways to offer individual blogs, but not using WordPress. The only way I know if is to make people authors, so they can post. I’ve done this with the newly redesigned blog, using a plugin to list authors, and also making a category for each user. To personalize it further, I’ve added the Category Icons plugin.

Nieruchomosci Gryfino, I agree, though I’ve read that it’s going to become more closely associated with regular WordPress.

Shelly, Keep in mind that mine is just one experience. If you have more time and energy to invest, then it may be worth a shot. Also, I used a much earlier version than what is available now, so there have probably been many advancements.

Jean, The problem I ran into was spammers, whether live or bots, created thousands of blogs with gibberish and spam links. I had the latest posts displayed on the front page, which become all spam. And the biggest problem is that they inflated the database to an unmanageable size. I made it through five thousand blogs to find legit ones before giving up. I have no idea how many there really were.

Thanks for the feedback, I was thinking about using Wordpress MU on a website that I have dedicated to a sports player that I am a big fan of. But yeah I guess it would be more hassle than it’s worth. Reading from your experience, besides the spammers, I could see some people who don’t like the person coming in and just creating a bunch of hateful sub websites, which would be another headache.

Till then,

Jean

Why don’t you start searching on guess blogger? I believe this is more possible to search quality authors. But before that, you should have good traffic in your blog.

why bother sitting in there deleting those spam if you can simply install new plug ins to filer those. they can get the job done rather than you giving MU up… :D

It was an older version of MU and I had a hell of a time doing any mods. There also wasn’t a lot out at the time to help combat the spam. Before I knew it I was overrun and outdated. The best solution for everyone was to start over.
